Two society trait slots can shape your faction’s economy, battlefield endurance, and expansion. This Age of Wonders 4 society traits tier list compares PvE picks across those strengths, including the restrictions that make some traits harder to use. The S–D placements apply to Ogre patch PvE balance, with Manta’s November changes explained alongside the affected traits.
What Manta Changes About Your Picks
The Silver Seas and Manta update launched on November 3, 2026. Trade Routes change how outposts and vassals contribute to your economy, while the water overhaul makes naval movement and combat more flexible.
Keep these changes in mind before choosing your faction:
- Outposts require a Trade Route to provide income. They no longer charge 10 Gold upkeep, and connected outposts send their domain income to the linked city.
- Trade Route capacity starts at 1 per city. Trade structures expand that capacity.
- Free City tribute without a route is capped at 10% of Gold and Mana income. Routes provide access to a share of their broader resource output.
- Embarking now costs a flat 20 Movement Points. Summons, resurrection, transformations, and magical teleportation also work in water battles, with a few exceptions.
For diplomacy builds, budget for the route itself. Routes use the unit production queue and cost Draft based on their destination and distance. Protect their paths during wars: successful raids pay the attacker three times their per-turn income.

S Tier: Broad Value and Strong Momentum
These traits combine valuable economic support or combat sustain with benefits that fit several faction plans.
Image: Steam / Triumph Studios
| Society trait | Tier | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| Runesmiths | S | Reduces Unit Enhancement research cost by 40% and upkeep by 30%. Enchantment-heavy armies benefit from both faster research and lower ongoing costs. |
| Adept Settlers | S | Cuts the Imperium cost of founding cities by 25%, supporting an expansion-focused economy. |
| Mana Addicts | S | Spell-triggered Life Steal gives armies a powerful source of combat sustain. Cheap combat spells help keep the benefit accessible. |
| Ritual Cannibals | S | Combines Corpse Eating with Food and Mana rewards from qualifying victories, supporting both army recovery and economic growth. |
| Chosen Uniters | S | Strong support for Free City diplomacy and vassal income under Ogre balance. Manta reduced its income bonus from +30% to +10%. |
Runesmiths has a straightforward payoff: the more your army depends on unit enchantments, the more relevant its discounts become. Prioritize enchantments that support units you intend to keep fielding.
Adept Settlers serves a different purpose. Spend its founding discount on useful city locations rather than expanding simply because founding is cheaper. The benefit supports expansion; it does not remove the need to defend what you settle.
Ritual Cannibals offers particularly concrete rewards. The nearest city gains +3 Food and Mana per tier of non-Magic Origin units killed or lost in a victory. Use Corpse Eating when battlefield recovery matters, and consume corpses you want to deny to resurrection abilities.
For Chosen Uniters, build around Manta’s route requirements. Establish connections to valuable vassals instead of expecting the older income bonus to carry the economy by itself.
A Tier: Powerful With a Matching Army or Empire
These picks offer substantial value when your faction consistently uses their main mechanic.
Image: www.paradoxinteractive.com
| Society trait | Tier | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| Prolific Swarmers | A | Lower non-Magic Origin upkeep and stronger starting Tier I troops support inexpensive armies and early momentum. |
| Gifted Casters | A | Additional casting points and cheaper combat spells directly support frequent spellcasting. |
| Mana Channelers | A | Summoning discounts support summon-focused armies, with additional value for evolving Magic Origin units. |
| Fabled Hunters | A | Extra clearing rewards and regeneration help maintain early exploration and combat momentum. |
| Devotees of Good | A | Rewards maintaining good alignment with city-based Gold and Imperium income. |
| Relentless Crusaders | A | Generates Imperium through warfare, making sustained conflict central to its value. |
| Equipment Hoarders | A | Turns equipment accumulation into a useful Mana economy. |
| Subterranean Society | A | Strengthens underground development through resource discovery and subterranean specialization. |
| Keepers of Knowledge | A | Supports Free City influence and Knowledge generation through Whispering Stones. |
| Silver Tongued | A | Removes resource costs from Free City trade deals and provides diplomatic tools through Court of Whispers. |
Prolific Swarmers reduces upkeep for non-Magic Origin units by 20% and gives +1 Rank to Tier I units. Apply that discount to an army you can keep recruiting and reinforcing. A summon-centered roster draws less value from this particular upkeep benefit.
Gifted Casters grants +10 World Map Casting Points, +10 Combat Casting Points, and −20% Mana Cost for Combat Spells. Choose it when casting capacity and combat spell costs are recurring constraints. Choose Mana Channelers when summoning is the main investment.
For Fabled Hunters, keep clearing. Its value comes from turning exploration rewards and recovery into continued early pressure.
The diplomacy choices depend heavily on available Free Cities. With Silver Tongued, pursue useful Magic Material trades and use Court of Whispers to support your diplomatic reach. Manta also fixes its Imperium discount for House trade treaties.
Keep Relentless Crusaders attached to a war plan. Its Imperium engine loses relevance when your faction spends long stretches at peace.
B Tier: Useful Tools With Clear Conditions
B-tier traits can support strong runs, but their value depends more on terrain, particular systems, or how often you use their benefits.
Image: Steam / Triumph Studios
| Society trait | Tier | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| Bannerlords | B | More frequent Rally of the Lieges recruitment supports vassal armies; revealing a nearby Free City helps start diplomacy early. |
| Ruthless Raiders | B | Gold and Draft rewards support aggression, with greater value when fighting remains frequent. |
| Druidic Terraformers | B | City-core terrain benefits suit elemental builds, but have a narrower reach than broad economic bonuses. |
| Experienced Seafarers | B | Water-heavy realms increase its value substantially. Manta removed its economic bonus from River provinces. |
| Talented Collectors | B | Rewards access to Magic Materials, making local resource availability important. |
| Great Builders | B | Faster Special Province Improvements support builds that depend on those structures. |
| Reclaimers | B | Supports frequent Item Forge use through its reclamation economy and starting forge access. |
| Cult of Personality | B | Extra hero development supports hero-focused armies, while rising hero upkeep demands economic support. |
| Devious Watchers | B | Strong scouting and vision improve early information gathering, though the benefit is less direct than income or army discounts. |
| Powerful Evokers | B | Additional Combat Casting Points support Battle Mage armies, but overlap with other casting-point solutions. |
Bannerlords makes Rally of the Lieges occur twice as often. It also reveals the nearest Free City and grants +25 Allegiance with it. Use that early contact to begin building the vassal network that supports its recruitment benefit.
Great Builders cuts Special Province Improvement Production costs by 50%. Prioritize it when those improvements are central to your build’s unit access or economy.
Devious Watchers provides +2 Vision Range for Cities and Provinces, universal Camouflage for scouts, and Watch Towers on starting outposts. Scout contested territory and expansion routes early enough to act on that information.
For Experienced Seafarers, inspect the realm’s actual water coverage. River provinces no longer qualify for its economic bonus under Manta. On Islands, the update shifts resource values toward the ocean and away from land, giving water access more economic relevance.
C Tier: Narrow Strategies and Uneven Payoffs
These traits demand a more deliberate commitment or depend on opportunities the map provides.
| Society trait | Tier | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| Chosen Destroyers | C | Changes the campaign’s rules around destruction. Successful runs can become powerful, but the trait demands its own strategy. |
| Merciless Slavers | C | Fits morale-breaking armies that can capture enemy troops; its value is concentrated in that playstyle. |
| Ancient Wise Ones | C | Research acceleration helps, but random discounts can land on spells outside your intended build. |
| Wonder Architects | C | Annexed Ancient Wonders provide substantial Production, but constrain city placement around suitable sites. |
| Scions of Evil | C | Stronger benefits require sufficiently evil alignment, delaying bonuses that would be especially useful early. |
Wonder Architects gives cities +20% Production per annexed Ancient Wonder. Place cities to take advantage of accessible wonders, while accounting for the cost of clearing and defending those locations.
With Merciless Slavers, commit to morale pressure. Its capture benefits need an army that can reliably create the right opportunities.
Manta adds +3 Trade Route capacity in every city for Chosen Destroyers. Use that capacity to expand your trade network. The added capacity does not remove the need to construct routes or secure their destinations.
For Scions of Evil, pursue the alignment its benefits require. Picking it without an evil campaign plan delays the payoff further.
D Tier: Restrictions That Demand Extra Planning
These placements reflect awkward general-purpose PvE value under Ogre balance. Their restrictions require a faction built specifically to accommodate them.
| Society trait | Tier | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| Imperialists | D | Rewards a compact, connected empire, with less appeal for campaigns built around widespread expansion. |
| Hermit Kingdom | D | Encourages isolation and limited development patterns that conflict with an expansion-focused approach. |
| Perfectionist Artisans | D | Doubling city structure Production costs slows development, while additional Gold requires time to compensate. |
| Umbral Disciples | D | Gloom and Umbral mechanics demand a specialized campaign plan rather than providing simple general-purpose value. |
Perfectionist Artisans makes structure timing a central concern. Plan construction around the doubled Production requirement before committing to an economy that needs several buildings quickly.
Umbral Disciples receives a specific Manta improvement: rulers gain immunity to Umbral Malady. Its Altar of Marching Gloom provides +10 Mana and spreads Gloom by 1 province per turn, reaching a radius equal to the city’s tier.
Build around that terrain system if you choose the trait. Its appeal rests on using the Umbral package throughout the campaign.
Merchant State and Tidecallers Under Manta
Merchant State introduces a trade-centered alternative to normal city development. Its benefits are substantial, but so is its central restriction: cities cannot be founded or absorbed.
Its trade bonuses are:
- +2 Trade Route Capacity per Vassal
- +10 City Stability for cities with an active Trade Route
- +5 Imperium for each Trade Route to another empire’s city
- 30% lower Trade Route costs
Explore prospective trading partners before planning routes. Their cities must be explored, and trading with another empire requires a Free Trade Agreement, unlocked after a Wizard Bond. Ending that agreement cancels routes between the two empires.
A route to another empire’s city provides 20% of that city’s Gold and Mana income. For Free Cities, route income instead depends on diplomatic status and vassalage stage. Establishing a route also grants +100 Relation with that Free City.
Tidecallers receives a more direct recruitment improvement: 20% lower Gold and Draft costs for the units it unlocks in cities. Apply the discount to those units when planning recruitment; it is not a discount for the entire roster.
Water combat changes also broaden the tools available to these armies. Use summons and magical teleportation at sea, and account for embarked units’ Limited Maneuverability when positioning. Turning consumes movement, and their rear hexes cannot be covered by Opportunity Attacks or Retaliations.
Affinity and Prophecy Alternatives
Empire of the Cosmos rewards spreading affinity investment across all six affinities. Its thresholds offer a distinct alternative to specializing early:
- 1 of each Affinity: +20 Mana and no affinity requirements for Tier III tomes.
- 2 of each Affinity: +20 Knowledge and no affinity requirements for Tier IV tomes.
- 3 of each Affinity: +20 Imperium and no affinity requirements for Tier V tomes.
Plan tome selections around reaching those thresholds if you choose it. Its benefits depend on breadth across every affinity.
The three Vision traits offer different completion rewards. Choose Vision of Destiny for permanent unit empowerment and +2 Affinity based on the interpretation. Choose Vision of Promise for a powerful Throne City and +1 Affinity, or Vision of Ruin for a powerful global effect and +1 Affinity.
These Vision traits exclude one another. Pick the reward that supports your intended army or empire before committing to its prophecy.
