How to Get a Strong Start
An expensive army can leave you winning battles while your empire falls behind. This Age of Wonders 4 guide focuses on keeping city development, research, and military spending moving together. Start by scouting nearby resources, clearing manageable enemies, and reserving enough Imperium to establish another city.
Before committing your opening resources, make three checks:
- Inspect the surrounding provinces. Locate resource deposits, magic materials, ancient wonders, and nearby threats.
- Check building boosts. Choose province improvements that reduce the cost of structures you intend to build.
- Review recurring expenses. Leave room in your gold and mana income for the troops and enchantments you already maintain.
Your immediate goal is an army that can secure useful territory while your cities develop the economy to support further expansion.

Choose a Manageable Realm and a Focused Faction
The Silver Seas and Manta Update arrived on November 3, 2026. Keep your opening campaign manageable by choosing a realm whose geography and modifiers you understand.

Use a smaller opponent count and a comfortable difficulty while learning. Read realm modifiers before starting; unusual conditions add another layer of decisions before you have learned the basic economy.
Choose a premade faction if customization feels overwhelming. When creating your own, read the gameplay traits attached to your choices and build around a clear direction.
Focus on how these pieces work together:
- Culture shapes your starting roster and access to distinctive structures.
- Society traits add bonuses and contribute affinity.
- Your starting Tome of Magic supplies an initial research direction and additional affinity.
- Your ruler’s equipment determines what that hero brings into early battles.
Match your starting tome to units you expect to field. If its enchantments improve a particular kind of attack or unit, check that your roster can actually benefit.
Affinity also connects faction creation to later development. Keep an eye on it when choosing additional tomes, especially when working toward higher-tier magic or a particular Empire Development branch.
Build Cities Around Boosts and Useful Infrastructure
Food grows population, population allows province annexation, and province improvements help unlock building boosts. Those boosts make city structures cheaper and faster to complete.

Before annexing a province, inspect the next structure you want. If it needs a Farm, Quarry, or Forester for its boost, weigh that requirement alongside the province’s resource deposit.
A province containing gold does not automatically need a Mine to provide its deposit bonus. Where the terrain allows another improvement, you can collect that resource while also satisfying a building boost.
For an opening framework:
- Build a Workshop to increase construction output.
- Add another production structure, such as a Stonemason, when available and affordable.
- Develop the Farms, Quarries, and Foresters needed for upcoming boosts.
- Work toward Town Hall upgrades for access to stronger cultural troops and additional development.
- Add stability and income buildings as your city’s needs change.
Treat this as a sequence of priorities. If an infestation threatens your border, spend on defense. If unit upkeep is draining your treasury, address gold income before committing to another expensive project.
Building boosts can also apply after construction has begun. Check the requirements again when population grows; a newly annexed province can improve a structure already underway.
Avoid filling a long construction queue just because you can afford it. Gold committed to distant projects cannot help with an immediate recruitment need or a useful outpost.
Understand the Seven Resources
Production and Draft serve different construction tracks, while Gold helps fund both. A city can build a structure and recruit a unit simultaneously, but both purchases still compete for your treasury.

| Resource | Main uses |
|---|---|
| Food | Growing city population and enabling further province annexation |
| Production | Constructing city structures and special province improvements |
| Draft | Recruiting units through city recruitment |
| Gold | Purchasing structures and units, developing outposts, paying upkeep, and funding siege projects |
| Mana | Casting spells and maintaining summoned units and enchantments |
| Knowledge | Researching spells, units, enchantments, transformations, and other tome unlocks |
| Imperium | Founding or absorbing cities, buying Empire Development skills, increasing city capacity, and supporting other empire actions |
Keep Gold Available for Development
Check the ongoing cost before recruiting another unit. Its purchase price is only part of the commitment; upkeep continues while that unit remains in service.
Recruit with a purpose: clearing a guarded resource, defending an exposed city, replacing casualties, or preparing an attack. Avoid maintaining troops that your current plans do not require.
Use rushing selectively. Finishing a useful production building early can accelerate later construction, but spending your entire reserve leaves little flexibility for emergencies.
Balance Mana With Casting Capacity
Mana pays for magic, while casting points limit how quickly you can use it. A large reserve alone does not let you cast every available spell immediately.
Before adding an enchantment or summon, inspect its upkeep. Keep enough income to support existing effects and enough stored mana for the battles you expect to fight.
Summoning can preserve gold for infrastructure because magical recruitment uses mana. It still creates a recurring expense, so check the unit’s full upkeep before casting.
Give Food and Draft a Specific Job
Use Food to reach provinces that improve your city’s prospects: a needed building boost, a valuable deposit, or an ancient wonder you can annex.
Invest in Draft when you need sustained recruitment. Faster unit production helps during an active war, but it cannot solve an inability to afford those units afterward.
Expand With Cities, Outposts, and Imperium
Establish additional cities while you still have room under your city cap. Each one adds another source of income and another location for construction and recruitment.
For a practice campaign, aim toward a second city around turn 10 and a third before turn 20 when nearby threats and resources allow it. Use those targets to keep expansion on your agenda, then adjust to the map.
Scout potential sites before spending. Look for:
- Magic materials and useful resource deposits.
- Ancient wonders within practical annexation range.
- Enough surrounding territory for development.
- A position your existing forces can defend.
Build an outpost at your chosen location, then upgrade it into a city. Reserve Imperium for that conversion before buying optional Empire Development skills.
Outposts also have uses beyond settlement. They can secure distant resources, support access to wonders, and provide friendly territory for recovery. Inspect their income and upkeep before placing several across the map.
Watch your city cap when conquering or incorporating settlements. Going over it penalizes city income. Compare the cost of increasing capacity with the value of keeping another settlement under direct control.
For Imperium income, work toward Wizard Tower upgrades in your Throne City. Also inspect relevant faction bonuses and the diplomatic consequences of declaring war before committing to a conflict.
Research Tomes You Can Put to Work
Knowledge unlocks new tools, but your economy determines whether you can use them. A powerful summon needs mana, an enchantment adds upkeep, and a recruitable unit needs the resources and infrastructure to enter your army.
Before selecting research, ask:
- Does this improve troops I already use?
- Can I afford to cast or recruit it?
- Does it solve an immediate combat or economic problem?
- Does its tome support my longer-term affinity goals?
Choose an immediately useful enchantment or unit when it will help clear nearby threats. Choose economic research when your current army already handles those fights and development is the bottleneck.
Review your spellbook after completing research. Unlocking a transformation or army enchantment does not apply it automatically; you still need to cast it.
Check Empire Development alongside arcane research. Affinity advances the corresponding branches, while Imperium purchases the available skills. Read whether a skill grants a lasting benefit or a one-time reward, then compare that value with your next city’s needs.
Use Combat to Secure Growth Without Losing Momentum
Your opening army can gain experience, collect rewards, and clear provinces for annexation. Pick fights that advance those goals while leaving the force healthy enough to continue.
Keep scouts moving to reveal routes, resources, and potential settlement sites. Use roads where practical to cover ground faster, and inspect underground entrances when they offer useful exploration opportunities.
Distinguish stationary guards from infestations. Infestations can send hostile armies toward your territory, so account for them when choosing expansion sites and moving your main force away.
Use automatic combat for routine encounters, then inspect the losses. Take manual control when protecting valuable units or handling a difficult fight matters more than resolving it quickly. Army strength provides a useful comparison, but the condition and composition of your troops still deserve attention.
After a costly battle, recover in friendly territory before attempting another demanding encounter.
Keep heroes ready between fights:
- Equip useful items instead of leaving them unused.
- Spend available skill points.
- Match equipment to the hero’s intended role.
- Inspect army support abilities as well as personal combat upgrades.
Approach ancient wonders with a healthy army. Clearing one can provide immediate rewards and make its province available for annexation, connecting military success directly to economic growth.
Use Diplomacy and Prepare for Your Victory Objective
Give a Whispering Stone to a free city you intend to cultivate. Allegiance builds toward stronger diplomatic relationships and eventual vassalage, while Imperium can accelerate that process when you need to compete for influence.
Compare incorporation with continued vassalage before absorbing the settlement. Direct control uses city capacity and requires development spending; a vassal can contribute resources while remaining outside your directly governed cities.
Check the Rally of Lieges as your relationships and controlled wonders develop. It provides another recruitment route without using city Draft. Inspect the available units before ordering equivalent troops from a city, and remember that Rally availability limits how much it can replace regular recruitment.
With rival rulers, inspect personality, relations, and grievances before settling close to their borders or contesting a free city. Use trade and diplomatic pacts when they support a border you want to keep peaceful.
Open the victory objectives while your empire is still developing. Identify which conditions are enabled and what your chosen route requires. For a conquest campaign, plan around enemy rulers and Throne Cities. For research or territorial objectives, prepare the economy, locations, and defensive coverage needed to complete them.
Before triggering a victory sequence that requires defending specific sites, position your armies within reach and retain income for replacements. A force fighting far beyond your borders cannot quickly protect an objective at home.
