Age of Wonders 4 Hero Builder: Skills and Class Guide

Your hero’s strongest turn starts with the choices you make at level-up. Use this Age of Wonders 4 hero builder guide to connect your ruler abilities, class skills, and equipment into a focused build. That focus matters because an impressive ability still competes with movement, attacks, and other skills for your hero’s turn.

How to Plan Your Hero Build

Start by separating the three parts of the hero skill screen: hero type on the left, class in the center, and signature skills on the right. Your ruler type and combat class serve different purposes. A Wizard King brings spellcasting support through its ruler abilities, while an Elementalist specializes in elemental attacks through its class tree.

Build your plan in this order:

  1. Choose the hero’s battlefield role. Pick direct damage, control, healing, or a supported fighter role.
  2. Inspect the hero-type abilities. Account for tools such as Command or Channeling Ritual before allocating class points.
  3. Follow the prerequisites toward your defining class skills. Include the cost of reaching them.
  4. Review signature choices at their unlock levels. Compare their benefits with the class skills competing for your points.
  5. Fit equipment around the finished role. Check weapon access and ruler equipment restrictions.

Heroes reach level 20, with 23 skill points available across progression, including the extra points gained through signature dedications. Signature choices become available at levels 4, 8, 12, and 16. Selecting a dedication grants an extra skill point; spending further points on its associated abilities is a separate decision.

When using a planner, inspect mutually exclusive branches before committing to a route. Save separate versions when comparing alternatives so each plan has a clear point budget.

Keep the update sequence in mind when choosing a template:

Use a template that matches your game’s skill trees. The Griffon class changes already separated elemental damage, curses, healing, and divine fighter support into distinct paths.

Champion and Wizard King: Build Around Your Ruler Ability

Champion: Command and Army Support

The Champion starts with Command, which restores a non-hero unit’s action points. Its upgrades offer a choice between making Command a free action and extending its effect to an additional nearby target.

Choose the free-action upgrade when you want your ruler to contribute an attack or class ability during the same turn. Choose the additional-target option when restoring two units’ actions supports your army’s plan.

Order the turn around the refresh: let the intended recipient spend its actions before using Command.

The shared Mortal Champion skills also provide useful army bonuses:

SkillEffect
Defensive FormationOther army units gain 1 Defense and Resistance while adjacent to friendly units
Offensive FormationArmy units gain 10% damage while adjacent to friendly units
Experienced LeaderNon-hero army units gain 15 experience per turn
Foraging TrainingArmy units regenerate 10 additional hit points per turn
Endurance TrainingOther non-hero army units gain 10 hit points and 2 Status Resistance

Defensive Formation and Offensive Formation are mutually exclusive. Match that choice to whether you want stronger attacks or more protection from your formation.

Take Experienced Leader early if you want more turns of passive experience gains. Prioritize Foraging Training when recovery between fights is slowing your army’s movement across the map.

Wizard King: Extra Spells Without Sacrificing Your Turn

The Wizard King’s Channeling Ritual allows an additional combat spell that turn. Its normal activation consumes the hero’s full action allowance.

Two upgrades change that tradeoff:

  • Quickened Ritual makes the ability a free action.
  • Defensive Ritual reduces activation to one action point, grants 10 temporary hit points, enters defense mode, and shortens the cooldown.

Choose Quickened Ritual to preserve the hero’s actions for class abilities or attacks. Consider Defensive Ritual when its defensive effects and shorter cooldown fit your intended turns.

An additional spell still requires mana and combat casting points. Budget those resources before planning around repeated double casts.

Further specialization separates damage and debuff spell support from healing and buff spell support. Amplified Evocation increases combat damage spell output by 20%, while Amplified Healing increases combat spell healing by 50% when the Wizard King is present. Follow the branch that supports the spells you actually use.

Elementalist: Choose an Element and a Target Pattern

The Elementalist concentrates on elemental attacks and evocations. Choose the discipline first, then select abilities that reinforce its damage and status effects.

Elemental pathDefining interactionMaster evocation
FireBasic attacks ignite the ground beneath targets and inflict BurningWildfire
FrostSlowed helps set up FrozenWithering Blizzard
EarthPhysical damage and Sundered Armor support physical attackersSunder Earth
StormsLightning Bolt strikes a line and chains from targets hitLightning Bolt

Evocation choices also determine how damage reaches the enemy. Area attacks punish groups, Chaining Evocation jumps between targets, and Focused Evocation concentrates damage on one opponent.

For a Frost control build, spread disabling effects across active threats. Amplifying Elements lets frozen enemies contribute to damage against remaining opponents, giving you a reason to switch targets after landing Frozen.

For an Earth build, pair armor reduction with physical damage units. Elemental Echo reinforces repeated elemental effects, including further armor sundering.

Positioning becomes especially important around Ritual of Elements. It resets cooldowns and increases evocation potency until the hero moves. Establish a protected casting position before activating it, then use the refreshed abilities while holding that position.

Keep Elemental Gateway available for relocation when threats close in. Its mobility helps the Elementalist escape pressure, but the class still depends on staying out of melee.

Warlock: Commit to Curses or Blood Pact Synergy

The Warlock combines enemy debuffs with necromantic support. Its pact choice establishes two different combat patterns.

Hex Pact links to an enemy and applies increasingly severe penalties over successive turns. Use it against a durable threat your army needs help dismantling. Follow its curse branches when you want morale pressure, Misfortune, and additional control.

Blood Pact links to a friendly unit and increases the Warlock’s offensive power. Damage taken by the Warlock also hits the linked ally. Link an expendable unit and protect the Warlock from unnecessary attacks; the offensive boost comes with a cost to your own army.

The Eternal Servitude upgrade adds Resurgent and healing through attacks to the linked unit, expanding the pact’s support options.

Several abilities connect these paths:

  • Siphon Blessings removes positive effects from an enemy.
  • Curse applies debuffs to multiple targets.
  • Infectious Affliction spreads Afflicted and Diseased through connected targets.
  • Transfer Life provides healing and a buff without spending action points.

Transfer Life normally has one use per battle, but a Warlock kill or the death of one of its summoned units refreshes it. Track those triggers before choosing your next action.

For necromancy, choose between repeated single-target uses of Raise Undead and the once-per-combat mass raising of Dark Ritual.

Claim Soul provides a close-range finisher that ignores Defense. A killing blow heals the Warlock, refreshes its abilities, and raises the victim as a controlled Wightborn version. Reserve it for a target within killing range to gain the full effect.

Ritualist: Choose Prevention, Recovery, or Both

The Ritualist focuses on keeping an army functioning through protection, healing, and recovery.

Its Wildgrowth choice establishes an early direction. Hostile Wildgrowth supplies an offensive option, while Protective Wildgrowth helps friendly units evade attacks. Awaken Entwined can animate flora into an Entwined Thrall, with an upgrade allowing an Entwined Protector.

The healing branch offers a separate decision: Rejuvinate affects an area, while Restore delivers a stronger heal to one target. Choose around how your army takes damage—across several units or concentrated on a particular defender.

Other skills answer specific battlefield problems:

  • Decompose denies resurrection opportunities while providing additional healing.
  • Deathward protects a threatened unit from dying before further support arrives.
  • Polymorph can neutralize an enemy by transforming it into a weakened animal.
  • Reincarnate permanently returns a lost friendly unit as an animal of equivalent tier.

The later Rite abilities provide battlefield-wide effects once per combat. Rite of Fury grants Hastened, Vigil prepares the army for incoming attacks, and Rite of Restoration restores health.

Time the Rite around its purpose. Use an advance or protection effect before the army commits; hold the healing Rite until units have damage to recover.

Battlesaint: Match Fervor Generation to Your Actions

The Battlesaint, introduced with Archon Prophecy, supports Cleric, Paladin, and martyr-style builds. Its central resource is Fervor, which provides Status Effect Resistance and powers other abilities.

Choose the starting archetype around how the hero will spend turns:

  • Cleric gains Fervor each turn, supporting healing and defensive play.
  • Paladin gains Fervor through attacks, including melee retaliations.

The next defining choice determines how that resource becomes healing or offense.

AbilityTargeting and effect
Cleric’s FervorRanged healing that scales with Fervor
Saint’s FervorFree-action healing for the hero or an adjacent ally
Warrior’s FervorSelf-healing plus Strengthened stacks based on Fervor spent

For a support build, follow healing skills and Bless, a free-action ability that grants Fortune. Pair its support use with Fervorous Disciple to supplement Fervor generation.

For a fighter build, combine attack-based Fervor generation with the Paladin side’s auras and Condemnation, which weakens an adjacent enemy as a free action.

For a martyr build, inspect Warding Bond and Radiant Retribution. These support taking hits for valuable allies and damaging adjacent enemies that attack the hero.

Later options continue those themes: battlefield-wide Regeneration for support, Immortal Saint for returning from death after one turn with 5 Fervor stacks, and Smite for an offensive Fervor expenditure.

Equipment and Action Costs: Finish the Build

Check equipment access before making a weapon central to your plan. Heroes have weapon, armor, mount, utility, and ring slots, with shield access depending on their weapon. Ruler types can impose further restrictions.

Dragon Lords cannot equip headgear, torso armor, leg armor, off-hand equipment, or mounts. The Battlesaint can use any weapon except ranged weapons, which remain Ranger-specific in the Griffon class design.

Equip for the job you chose. Support a caster’s positioning and abilities, protect a fighter expected to take retaliations, and account for any healing already built into the class.

Finally, write out one intended combat turn. Include movement, your main ability, free actions, and any action refresh. This exposes conflicts that a list of powerful skills can hide: moving ends Ritual of Elements’ stationary benefit, an expensive ruler ability competes with class attacks, and Blood Pact makes incoming damage costly for an ally.

Use that turn to make the final cuts. Keep the skills and items that help execute it, and spend the remaining points on the army support or defensive tools your plan needs.
