How Do You Win in Age of Wonders 4?
Your empire needs a finish line before another ruler reaches theirs. Age of Wonders 4 victory conditions let you win through conquest, territorial control, magical research, or score, with additional routes on specific DLC realms. Choose your objective early so your cities, armies, and research contribute to the same goal.
Four victory types are available by default. Empires & Ashes adds Seals Victory on appropriately configured realms, while Rise from Ruin introduces a Cataclysm route tied to a particular realm trait.
| Victory type | Main requirement | Final objective |
|---|---|---|
| Military | Defeat or vassalize every required rival empire | Remove all remaining opposition |
| Expansion | Control enough provinces and build three Beacons of Unity in different cities | Defend the lit beacons for 15 turns |
| Magic | Bind enough Gold Ancient Wonders and research a Tier V tome and its victory spell | Complete a 15-turn countdown |
| Score | Lead the overall score when the turn limit arrives | Highest score wins; the default limit is 150 turns |
| Seals | Occupy Seals on a World Seals realm | Reach the realm’s required point total |
| Cataclysm | Play with Echoes of the Fracturing | Complete three of four Fated Regions to trigger the event offering this route |
Open the Quest window to track objectives and compare your progress with other factions. Check realm settings before committing to a plan: victory conditions can be adjusted or disabled, and some realm traits impose restrictions.

Military Victory: Defeat or Vassalize Your Rivals
Military Victory requires you to deal with every opposing player faction, whether controlled by a human or the AI. You have two routes:
Image: Steam / Triumph Studios
- Eliminate an empire: Capture its Throne City while its ruler is banished to the Astral Void.
- Make it your vassal: Become its overlord, removing it as an independent contender for victory.
Taking a Throne City alone does not satisfy the elimination requirement. Defeating a ruler alone also leaves the job unfinished. Coordinate both objectives, and keep control of the Throne City while finishing the ruler.
Cities use siege mechanics, so plan for more than a quick raid. Bring the forces needed to maintain a siege and win the battles around it.
Chaos supports aggression through rewards for conquest, pillaging, and razing. Materium supports military development and siege warfare. Order offers another useful angle through vassals and units obtained from the Rally of the Lieges.
Tip: Check whether vassalization can settle a rival’s defeat before committing your armies to further sieges. You do not need to conquer every city to fulfill the military objective.
With Allied Victory enabled, your direct allies are excluded from the opponents you must defeat. An ally’s ally receives no such exemption unless that faction is also allied with you.
Expansion Victory: Build and Defend Three Beacons
Expansion turns territorial control into a victory countdown. Your province requirement scales with the map, so use the Quest window’s target rather than planning around a fixed number.

The sequence is:
- Control the required share of provinces.
- Unlock the Beacon of Unity special province improvement.
- Build three Beacons of Unity in three different cities.
- Light the beacons.
- Protect them through the 15-turn countdown.
Your own cities’ provinces count toward the requirement. Provinces belonging to vassal free cities also count once they reach Bonded Vassalage or better.
The distinction between free cities and player factions matters here. Allied player factions and vassalized player factions do not contribute their provinces toward your threshold.
Prepare Before Lighting the Beacons
Lighting the beacons generates grievances for other rulers and attracts partisan marauder armies seeking to raze them. Rivals can also post bounties against your beacons.
Position defenders before starting the countdown. If hostile forces take a beacon, you have three turns to reclaim it before it is razed and the countdown stops.
Nature supports city growth and province acquisition. Order supports relationships with free cities and the development of vassals. Use those strengths to build the territory requirement while preparing your defensive armies.
Expansion requires at least three cities. It is disabled for factions using Chosen Destroyers and on realms with Megacities, because those impose a one-city limit.
Magic Victory: Bind Gold Ancient Wonders
Magic Victory combines research with control of valuable map locations. Its requirements center on Gold Ancient Wonders, a Tier V tome, and an Age of Magic spell.

The sequence is:
- Reach your first Tier III tome to make Bind Gold Ancient wonder available for research.
- Research the spell.
- Secure Gold Ancient Wonders annexed by your cities or outposts, then bind the required number.
- Research a Tier V tome.
- Research the relevant Age of Magic spell.
- Cast it after meeting the binding requirement, then complete the 15-turn countdown.
The number of required wonders depends on how many Gold Ancient Wonders the map generated. Check the objective before deciding which locations your empire needs to secure.
Gold Ancient Wonders have formidable defenders. Other empires may also contest them, so research alone cannot carry this route. Scout their locations while developing the armies needed to clear and hold them.
Casting the Age spell gives other rulers grievances. They can disrupt your victory attempt by capturing bound wonders.
Tip: Assign defenders to the wonders before casting the victory spell. Keep enough Knowledge income to advance your research and enough Mana to support the required spellcasting.
Astral provides research, Mana, and spellcasting support. Shadow also offers strong Knowledge generation. Architect cultures have another advantage: fully completed Monuments count toward their required total, reducing their dependence on Gold Ancient Wonders.
If you remember constructing a Seed, Root, and Heart, those belong to the launch-era Magic Victory system. The wonder-binding route uses different objectives.
Score Victory: Lead When the Turn Limit Arrives
Score Victory resolves a game when nobody has completed another enabled victory condition before the turn limit. The default limit is 150 turns, though realm setup allows that limit to be changed or disabled.
Your final standing draws on five categories:
- Military
- Diplomacy
- Economy
- Expansion
- Research
These categories track aspects of your empire’s performance, including actions taken during recent turns. Military score, for example, benefits from having more units and winning battles. Overall victory depends on your position across all five categories.
Tip: Review your standings as the limit approaches. Continue developing research, diplomacy, and your economy alongside your military, rather than assuming territorial size alone will carry the score.
Score Victory is disabled on story realms.
Seals Victory: Occupy Objectives and Accumulate Points
Seals Victory requires Empires & Ashes and a realm using one of these traits:
- World Seals
- World Seals (Active)
- World Seals (Dormant)
Seals appear in provinces across the map, guarded by powerful marauder armies. Cities and outposts cannot annex them. Defeat the guards and station an army directly on a Seal to begin accumulating points.
Each held Seal contributes +1 toward victory progress. Holding more Seals accelerates your progress, while the required total depends on the realm’s Seal configuration. Active requires fewer points; Dormant requires more.
Occupation brings repeated fighting. New defenders periodically awaken and attack the occupying army, with combat enchantments supporting them. Rival factions also gain grievances over held Seals and can post bounties to seize them.
Even a lone scout can hold a Seal, but that satisfies only the occupation requirement. Use armies capable of defeating returning defenders, and account for nearby rivals before spreading your forces across additional objectives.
Cataclysm and Story Realm Victories
Cataclysm Victory is available on Rise from Ruin realms with Echoes of the Fracturing.
Complete three of the four Fated Regions to trigger an artifact-collection Happening. During that event, choose to pursue Cataclysm Victory. Completing the regions brings you to the choice that starts this route.
Story realms and realms with presence traits can offer their own objectives. These often involve defeating a specific ruler or meeting diplomatic conditions.
For example, Pretender Kings adds three powerful rulers and an objective requiring each to be either allied with you or defeated. The Demon Prince presence offers an objective centered on defeating that ruler.
Read these special objectives alongside your standard victory options. A realm-specific goal can give you a different finish line from conquering every opponent.
Allied Victory and Pantheon Rewards
When Allied Victory is enabled, a winning faction shares victory with its allies. This setting is always enabled in team games.
For a military finish, that means you and your allies can win once the remaining required opponents have been defeated or vassalized. In open diplomacy, alliances can be formed or broken, so check your direct relationships when evaluating who still stands between you and victory.
Winning opens the results screen, displays performance graphs, and awards Pantheon experience. You can also ascend your ruler into the Pantheon, preserving transformations acquired during the game alongside an Ascension trait.
If that ruler already exists in your Pantheon, the game asks whether you want to overwrite the existing version. Review the ruler’s transformations and Ascension trait before accepting the replacement.
