Age of Wonders 4 Builds: 6 Focused Faction Strategies

Give your faction a clear way to win before choosing its finishing touches. These Age of Wonders 4 builds connect cultures, traits, and tomes around a specific combat plan, so your research strengthens the army you actually field. Pick between spell-heavy armies, resilient Phantasm Warriors, disposable skeletons, and mobile animal forces.

Plan Your Culture, Opening Tome, and Affinities

Start with the unit or mechanic you want to build around, then choose the culture that supports it. Open the encyclopedia and inspect the relevant cultural units before committing your traits.

Choose your opening tome for something you can use immediately. Prioritize an early summon, combat spell, or other tool that helps you clear encounters and expand. Save a supporting tome for later if its main contribution depends on troops you have not recruited.

Plan backward from your desired late-game tomes, too. Check their affinity requirements and account for the affinity your culture, society traits, and earlier tomes provide. Choose society traits for abilities that serve your army, then use their affinity contribution to complete the route.

Keep the update timeline in mind when adapting older combinations:

  • The Silver Seas and Manta Update launched November 3, 2026.

Compare the named abilities in the combinations below with your installed version’s encyclopedia before committing to the full setup.

High Battle Mages: Evocation and Spell Support

Build around battle mages if you want your research, ruler, and society traits pulling toward magical offense.

Start with Tome of Evocation, then consider Tome of Amplification and Tome of Teleportation as later steps. Choose Powerful Evokers and Gifted Casters for a faction focused on battle magic, and select a Wizard King to support the spellcasting plan.

Keep the focus on the actual units receiving your bonuses. Inspect your battle mages’ abilities, then select body traits that improve their role. Avoid spending those choices on benefits intended for a different part of your army.

Use later tome selections to address your army’s vulnerabilities. Tome of Mayhem offers Mark of Misfortune, providing a debuff option alongside your damage tools. Consider it when you want to hinder enemies threatening your fragile casters.

You can also select a lower-tier tome when it contributes more than the higher-tier alternatives. Take the useful enchantment or spell instead of choosing a tome solely because its tier is higher.

Phantasm Warriors: Build Around Racial Summons

The Phantasm setup exploits an important distinction: Phantasm Warriors are racial units. That gives this summon-focused army a reason to invest in racial improvements.

The core combines Astral, Order, and potentially Nature:

  • Tome of the Beacon and Tome of Sanctuary supply the Order side of the plan.
  • Keeper’s Mark provides protection against lethal damage.
  • Gaia’s Chosen adds durability to the Nature route.
  • Mass Rejuvenation supports the resurrection plan.

Commit to making those inexpensive warriors survive repeated engagements. Keep their defensive upgrades central to your research instead of spreading into unrelated unit lines.

For an Astral-heavy alternative, build toward Astral Mirror, Naga Transformation, and eventually Cosmic Overdrive. Treat the Nature and Astral versions as separate directions when planning your affinities.

Check targeting rules carefully across the rest of your army. Ordinary summoned animals and gremlins do not inherit body traits simply because your faction summoned them. Choose racial bonuses for racial troops and appropriate unit enchantments for the other summons you field.

Mystic Tentacle Control: Restrict Enemy Movement

Start this control setup with Mystic culture and Tome of the Tentacle. Its central tools are Summon Tentacle, Constricting Focus, Retaliating Growths, and the Constrictor unit.

Use the build to interfere with enemy movement and protect the troops dealing damage behind your frontline. Place your control effects around the enemies you need to keep away from vulnerable units.

Constrictors provide another way to apply Constricted without relying entirely on spellcasting opportunities. Include them when you want the frontline itself contributing to the control plan.

For a broader summoning direction, consider Mana Channelers, Gifted Casters, and a Wizard King. Keep those choices tied to the spells and summons you intend to use throughout the campaign.

Leave room in later research for damage and support. Add tomes that help your existing army capitalize on restricted enemies rather than continually adding more ways to perform the same control job.

Reaver Necromancy: Skeletons in Front, Shooters Behind

Combine Reavers with necromancy for an army concept built around expendable skeletons screening your ranged troops.

The division of labor is straightforward: send the disposable troops into contact while your shooters attack from behind them. Use that screen to keep enemy melee units occupied.

Choose necromancy tomes that develop the skeleton side of the army. When reviewing other research options, prioritize tools that improve the screen or support the ranged troops it protects.

You can take a different thematic direction with an Astral-heavy Mystic summoner necromancer. A canine form with dark fur and Wightborn creates an Anubis-inspired faction while keeping summoning and necromancy central to the design.

Keep these two concepts separate when selecting traits. For Reavers, plan around the interaction between your screen and shooters. For Mystic summoners, emphasize the summoning and spellcasting tools you intend to use.

Feudal Animals and Eagle Mounts: Plan the Whole Army

The flying-army concept combines Feudal culture, Eagle Mounts, and Pack Tactics, then develops through animal and support tomes.

Build the research plan around:

  • Tome of Beasts and Tome of Vigor for the animal direction.
  • Tome of Glades for Gladerunner archers.
  • Tome of Fey Mists for the support package alongside Wildspeakers.

The aim is a flying tier-three army. Check mount eligibility across the units you intend to recruit, and plan the complete composition before investing in a mobility theme.

Keep the opening practical. Tome of Beasts supports an army already able to move and fight effectively; choose your starting tome around the encounters your initial troops can actually handle.

For an icy variation, incorporate Cryomancy and Cold Dark. Account for their place in your research route before adding them, especially if you also want later Nature choices such as Paradise and Nature Goddess.

Dark Cryomancy: Debuffs and Snow

Start the Dark frost concept with Tome of Cryomancy and an Arctic Adaptation trait. Develop toward Cold Dark to continue the ice theme.

Choose this route around the connection between debuffs and snowy terrain. Use your adaptation when selecting settlement and expansion opportunities, and examine later frost options for effects that reinforce the same plan.

For a sturdier variation, use Industrious culture with Tome of Warding. Warding supplies Bolstered Resistance, which connects with the stacks Industrious units produce and interact with. Add frost effects if you want durable troops supported by slows.

Manually fight battles when your army depends on precise control or positioning. Frost Primal Darter and evasive Dragoon setups could perform strongly under direct control while suffering costly autoresolve losses. Compare the losses in an ordinary encounter before entrusting an expensive specialist army to repeated automatic battles.
