Which Custom Faction Should You Build?

For players searching for the Age of Wonders 4 best custom faction, the classic High archer build offers a clear starting point: strengthen inexpensive ranged units and keep enemies outside their effective reach. Choose Dark battlemages if you prefer an elemental rush that develops into a debuff-heavy army. Either way, build around troops that can keep fighting early, because those victories fund your expansion and research.

The Silver Seas and Manta Update arrived on November 3, 2026. The detailed faction recipes below use the May 2023 ruleset. When recreating them in Manta, read the current trait descriptions, unit tags, tome requirements, and upkeep costs before choosing your upgrades.

High Archers: Build Around Range and Repeated Attacks

The classic High setup combines Awakened archers, ranged enchantments, and an economy designed to support increasingly expensive troops. Its appeal is straightforward: a damage bonus applied across repeated attacks can make inexpensive archers dangerous well beyond their starting strength.

Under that ruleset, Awakening gave the archers +4 damage, +1 range, and +20% accuracy. That combination rewarded keeping them alive and firing repeatedly.

The economic setup mattered just as much. Champion and Imperialists supplied a combined +40 stability in the capital and qualifying connected cities. The original neutral High opening used that stability to activate food and production benefits, with Imperialists adding gold.

Connect expansion cities to the capital when using that arrangement. Keep enough frontline protection to preserve your archers while the economy develops; this configuration did not provide extra starting troops or recruitment ranks.

Tome priorities

Build the research plan around specific archer upgrades:

  • Tome of Enchantment: Seeker Arrows adds range.
  • Tome of Amplification: Amplified Arrows supports attacks that bounce between enemies.
  • Tome of Artificing: Artisan Armaments supplies the build’s critical-hit upgrade.
  • Tome of Faith: Convents support mana and research.
  • Tome of Winds: Zephyr Archers provide a later ranged option.
  • Tome of the Crucible: Meteoric Arrows supplies the late-game damage package.

The original approach collected several lower-tier tomes before moving deeper into the tree. When adapting it, plan the affinity requirements for later tomes before adding optional enchantments.

How to fight

Keep melee blockers, battlefield summons, or control effects between your archers and approaching enemies. Use that space to concentrate fire and remove threats before they reach your shooting line.

Add Roots if you want the Poison Arrows and Vine Prison package. Delay an extra damage enchantment when your immediate problem is enemies reaching the backline.

Watch mana income as the army grows. Seeker Arrows, Amplified Arrows, Artisan Armaments, and Meteoric Arrows made the original army expensive to maintain. Add enchantments alongside the income needed to sustain them.

Dark Battlemages: Rush Elementals, Then Exploit Debuffs

The Dark configuration opens with summoned elementals and transitions into a combination of Warlocks, debilitating effects, and Chaos Eaters. Its research choices connect an early military push to a later damage engine.

The May 2023 configuration produced fire elementals with additional starting ranks, helping them reach their evolved form quickly. Protect those developing summons so their experience turns into a stronger army.

Check upkeep again when they evolve. In the original setup, the discounts supporting tier I elementals did not all continue to apply after evolution.

Research toward the combo

The classic path continued through:

  1. Amplification for battlemage support.
  2. Mayhem for Mark of Misfortune.
  3. Pandemonium for Chaos Eaters and Vessels of Chaos.
  4. Teleportation for Phasing and strategic mobility.
  5. Scrying for Mental Mark.

The central interaction was debuff consumption. Under the May 2023 rules, a Chaos Eater dealt 12 damage per consumed debuff stack before percentage modifiers. Five stacks therefore represented 60 damage before those modifiers.

Apply debuffs before using the consuming attack. Use Warlocks to prepare targets, then move the Chaos Eater into position for the follow-up. Save that sequence for enemies whose removal will open the battlefield.

Keep your support investment focused. Once the army depends on this interaction, prioritize reliable debuff application and positioning over an unrelated damage package.

Avoid redundant healing investments

The original rules did not let Mana Addicts and Wightborn stack their lifesteal benefits. Corpse consumption and regeneration were separate healing mechanics.

Check whether a new transformation adds a distinct benefit before spending research on it. Build a healing plan around effects that complement one another.

Horde Summoners: Keep Reinforcements Moving

The classic Horde opening focuses on frequent summons, inexpensive troops, and sustained early fighting. Its purpose is to turn casting capacity into reinforcements while victories generate experience and resources.

Form traitsQuick Reflexes and Tenacious

Priority researchSummon Irregulars
Supporting researchSpawnkin and Houndmaster

Research Summon Irregulars early when using this opening. Keep enough mana and world-map casting capacity available to replace losses without stopping the army.

The May 2023 version could reach a rhythm of summoning a tier I unit each turn once its casting setup was established. Preserve the useful principle when adapting it: match reinforcement production to the pace of your fighting.

Choose battles for their contribution to the next turn. Clear resources that help develop a city, protect a settlement location, or strengthen your main army. Keep summons working toward those objectives.

Watch army quality as opposition improves. Cheap replacements support momentum, but the build still needs a plan for fighting stronger units. Decide which troops and enchantments will carry the army beyond its opening swarm.

Mounted Furies: A Different Archer Plan

The Barbarian mounted-archer variant uses Furies, Spider Mounts, and Nature magic to combine mobility with battlefield control.

Its proposed society setup paired Fabled Hunters with an option such as Prolific Swarmers or Runesmiths. The first supported the opening army and rewards from clearing; the other choices addressed troop upkeep or enchantment costs.

Start with Roots for Poison Arrows and Vine Prison, or Beasts for Animal Kinship, Call of the Wild, and Mark as Prey. Continue toward the ranged upgrades in Enchantment and Artificing, then develop the Nature and Materium paths needed for Paradise and Crucible.

The tradeoff against High archers was substantial under the May 2023 rules:

  • Furies were tier II, placing them outside the tier I bonuses used by the Horde archer setup.
  • Spider immobilization operated at shorter range than the fully developed High archer attacks.
  • High archers retained the repeated-attack benefits of Awakening.

Use mobility and control to justify that tradeoff. Keep enemies away from the firing line and concentrate attacks while they are contained.

Do not select Wolf Mounts solely to improve ranged attacks through Pack Hunter. In the May 2023 ruleset, that ability affected melee attacks.

Test Your Opening Before Committing to a Campaign

Play the first 20 turns with a new faction before judging its finished army. Look for repeated interruptions: wounded troops resting, mana shortages delaying summons, or research choices that contribute little to your actual units.

Use these checks to identify what needs changing:

  • Frequent recovery turns: Add healing or recuperation support.
  • Repeated troop losses: Review frontline protection, control effects, and combat positioning.
  • Idle summoning capacity: Check mana income and reinforcement priorities.
  • Slow research: Secure research infrastructure and suitable special province improvements.
  • Scattered upgrades: Concentrate enchantments on the units doing most of the fighting.

For an expansion-focused test, aim toward four cities by turn 21 where map conditions and settings allow. Treat that as an ambitious benchmark, then identify whether fighting, settlement access, or resource spending is limiting your opening.

Plan research infrastructure alongside combat power. Alchemy offers the Alchemist Lab, Cryomancy offers the School of Cryomancy, and Faith offers the Abbey. Choose a route that supports both your knowledge income and the affinities needed for later tomes.

Match your ruler to the job as well. Choose Wizard King when world-map casting is central to reinforcement production or your spell plan. Choose Champion when the opening army and economic setup benefit more from its strengths.

If you use auto-combat, watch replays of costly battles. Auto-combat plays out an AI-controlled fight, so the replay can expose unsupported archers, vulnerable summons, or a formation that works better under manual control. Change the part causing the losses, then replay the opening with that adjustment.
