Is Multiplayer Worth Playing With Friends?

Age of Wonders 4 multiplayer brings your custom fantasy empires into shared campaigns, whether you want allies or human rivals. Choosing how your group takes turns matters because tactical battles can stretch a session considerably. Try it with friends who enjoy deliberate strategy, and agree on the pace before committing to a campaign.

The game supports several ways to play together:

  • Online Co-op: Play cooperatively with other players.
  • Online PvP: Compete against human opponents.
  • Cross-Platform Multiplayer: Connect through cross-platform sessions.

The appeal goes beyond fighting another person's armies. Faction customization, Tomes of Magic, diplomacy, and evolving empires give each campaign its own personality. Your group can bring very different fantasy creations into the same realm, then watch those factions change as their magical powers develop.

Classic Turns, Simultaneous Turns, or PBEM?

Classic turns have players act in sequence. That creates waiting time during a live session, but it also suits asynchronous play: take your turn, step away, and return when the game comes back to you.

Simultaneous turns let players handle their turns concurrently, reducing the need to wait through everyone else's empire management. They do not remove the time commitment of tactical combat.

PBEM-style play, short for play by email, describes the slower, asynchronous rhythm. Here, the useful idea is taking turns through a shared cloud save without requiring everyone to stay at their computer together.

Choose the format around your actual availability:

  • Use simultaneous turns when your group wants to play together live and limit sequential waiting.
  • Use Classic turns when you prefer a clearly separated turn order.
  • Try asynchronous play when stepping away between turns fits your schedule.

Classic turns are also worth trying when troubleshooting. In February 2024, two unmodded campaigns using Classic turns reached completion after more than 100 turns, while another pair continued playing simultaneous campaigns with occasional interruptions. Neither experience makes a turn mode a guaranteed stability fix.

Why Campaigns Can Take So Long

Tactical combat creates the central pacing tradeoff: controlling a battle yourself takes time, while auto-resolve gives up direct control over unit decisions.

In competitive play, that tradeoff becomes especially noticeable. Preserving an army matters, so players have a reason to fight manually instead of accepting an automated result. A campaign with frequent manual battles asks for more patience from everyone involved.

Agree on combat expectations before starting. Decide whether your group wants manual battles throughout the campaign or prefers auto-resolve to keep things moving. Avoid forcing a faster format on players who joined specifically for tactical combat.

For asynchronous games, coordinate availability as carefully as the turn settings. A two-player match can move through several turns when both people happen to be available. Larger free-for-all or team games spanning different time zones have more opportunities to stall while waiting for the next person.

Mods and Crossplay Affect Lobby Access

Modded sessions add another compatibility problem to solve before the campaign begins. In February 2024, joining errors occurred even with apparently identical mod lists, so matching the visible list alone did not guarantee a successful connection.

Start with an unmodded session before introducing a shared mod setup. If you plan to use mods, compare the enabled mods and load order before attempting to join.

Lobby visibility also deserves attention. In the February 2024 Steam implementation, enabling mods restricted the browser to non-crossplay sessions—Steam-only sessions for Steam players. The browser did not filter sessions specifically by an identical mod list.

That distinction matters when a lobby seems to disappear: mod compatibility and crossplay visibility are separate issues.

Handling Desyncs and Interrupted Sessions

Desyncs, crashes, and stalled prompts disrupted some sessions in February 2024. Desyncs and crashes also affected some games in August 2025.

One specific interruption involved choosing a Tome of Magic or answering a story decision when another player started combat during simultaneous turns. Leaving and rejoining restored access in affected sessions.

Coordinate combat starts with your friends. Let someone finish an open tome selection or story prompt before beginning a fight. If that particular prompt gets stuck, try leaving and rejoining.

When an error repeats, record the turn, turn mode, enabled mods, and action immediately preceding it. Include those details when reporting the problem through the developer's channels, so the failure is easier to reproduce.
