Where to Find Mods and What to Look For

A spider-breeding empire and a sprawling realm full of rival rulers offer very different reasons to start another campaign. Age of Wonders 4 mods expand those possibilities with custom tomes, cultural units, faction options, and larger maps. Choose the part of your campaign you want to change, then browse the matching category.

Steam Workshop and Paradox Mods both carry community creations for the game. Their categories cover everything from interface adjustments and visual customization to spells, transformations, and mechanics overhauls.

Use these categories to narrow your search:

  • Tomes and Spells: Explore additional magical themes and research options.
  • Units and Cultures: Browse additions centered on army composition and faction identity.
  • Visuals and Interface: Find appearance changes and adjustments to battlefield presentation.
  • Realm Traits and Realm Templates: Explore options for shaping your next world.
  • Compatibility: Look for supporting items when assembling a collection.

Steam Workshop also offers Required DLC filtering and sorting options such as Last Updated and Most Popular. Use the DLC filter to match your collection, especially when browsing content alongside expansions.

Custom Tomes: Give Your Next Empire a Theme

Tomes connect magical research with the way your faction develops, making them a natural place to explore a different campaign concept. Workshop options include Tome of Crystals, Tome of the Fracture, and Tome of Consecrated Steel & its Form and Society traits.

For a concrete example of how a custom tome can reshape an army, consider the early Workshop version of Tome of arachnids.

Tome of arachnids

This tier-one tome combines Nature and Shadow affinity with a spider-focused toolkit. Its early version allows spiders to be trained in cities, alongside a web spell for slowing or immobilizing enemies.

The city structure Weaver's Hive provides gold and food, plus +2 starting rank for spiders trained in that city. That interaction gives the tome more purpose than simply adding another creature to recruit: starting rank matters for units that evolve as they gain ranks.

Build around the recruitment trade-off. Train spiders where Weaver's Hive grants its rank bonus; use summons when placement away from a city matters more. Support the spiders with the web spell to restrict enemy movement before committing your attacks.

These mechanics belong to the early Workshop version. For a campaign using the Manta Update, choose a release whose compatibility information matches your game.

Faction Customization and Expanded Cultural Units

Faction creation already combines physical forms, society traits, and magical development. Mods can push that identity further, either by changing your starting options or by expanding the troops associated with a culture.

Starting Racial Transformations

The early version of Starting Racial Transformations adds society traits that grant transformations at the beginning of a game, including major transformations.

That creates room for a faction whose defining transformation is present from the opening turns. It also changes the balance of faction creation: major transformations are powerful, and the mod includes incompatible society traits that prevent certain combinations.

Choose the transformation around the faction you want to play, then check its trait restrictions before planning the rest of the build.

Expanded Cultural Units

The early Expanded Cultural Units pack adds troops across Barbarian, Dark, Feudal, High, Industrious, and Mystic cultures. Its additions include a Shield Maiden for Barbarian armies, a Headhunter for Dark armies, and a tier-four Phoenix Keeper for High armies.

This is a broader change than a visual pack because it adds recruitable units. AI factions can also use the pack's additions, so expect the expanded roster to affect opposing armies as well as your own.

Banners, Colors, and Battlefield Readability

Visual customization can give a faction a stronger identity without building an entire campaign around a new tome.

Banner Bonanza expands banner choices, while Age of Colors adds color options for faction and ruler customization. Their early versions focus on making your creations look more distinct.

Smaller Combat Banners changes tactical presentation instead. In its early version, banners appear smaller during ordinary battlefield movement and enlarge when a unit is selected.

The trade-off is readability. Smaller markers expose more of the battlefield, but compact numbers can be harder to read. Select a unit when you need the enlarged banner to inspect its information.

Keep that distinction in mind when browsing visual categories: additional customization choices and smaller interface elements solve different problems.

Massive Maps and 12 Players: Plan for Longer Turns

Massive Maps and 12 Players expands the scale of realm setup, allowing 12 players and a massive player-distance setting.

The appeal is straightforward: more territory to explore and more rulers sharing the world. That scale also carries a performance cost. Large realms with many participants can take substantially longer to process turns, especially as the campaign develops.

Choose this setup when the larger world is central to the campaign you want to play. On a weaker PC, prioritize manageable realm settings over maximum scale.

Keep download size separate from performance expectations. A small mod package can still enable a much more demanding game configuration; the workload comes from the world being simulated.

Check Your Setup After the Manta Update

The Silver Seas and Manta Update launched on November 3, 2026. When choosing a collection for that release, check each item's compatibility information, required DLC, and dependencies before combining it with other changes.

The game's PC features provide the following starting points:

FeatureSupport
PC platformWindows
Steam mod integrationSteam Workshop
Cooperative multiplayerOnline Co-op
Competitive multiplayerOnline PvP

For multiplayer, review compatibility for the specific items your group wants to use. Support for online play in the base game does not make every combination of community content interchangeable.

Pay particular attention to dependencies. Workshop includes items required by other creations, so a collection can involve more than the headline tome or unit pack. Follow each item's requirements, and check for compatibility instructions when multiple additions change the same part of the game.
