What Do You Get With Age of Wonders 4 on Steam?
Build a fantasy empire whose people change alongside your strategy. The Age of Wonders 4 Steam release combines empire management, faction creation, and turn-based tactical battles, with Workshop mods and multiplayer extending the possibilities. Your starting faction is only the beginning: researching magic can reshape both its abilities and its appearance.
Developed by Triumph Studios and published by Paradox Interactive, the game launched on May 2, 2023. Its Steam version supports Windows and includes single-player, online PvP, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer.
Steam features include achievements, trading cards, Workshop support, and Steam Cloud. There are 120 achievements, including Valley of Wonders, Grexolis, and One for All, All for One, giving achievement hunters goals alongside their realm conquests.
English includes full audio support. Interface support also covers French, German, Spanish - Spain, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, and Simplified Chinese.
Editions, Bundles, and Sale Prices
Purchase options include the base game, Premium Edition, and the 2026 Collector's bundle. Before choosing a larger package, compare its included content with the factions, ruler types, and expansion themes you actually want to play.

Regional pricing matters. On November 3, 2026, the Colombian base-game price dropped to COL$ 75000 at a 60% discount, matching its lowest recorded price in that currency. Premium Edition was also discounted by 60%, to COL$ 134600.
Those amounts are Colombian prices, so use your own account region when deciding whether a sale fits your budget. Open the Age of Wonders 4 Steam purchase page to compare the available packages and their contents.
The expansions are optional, and released DLC can be installed in any order. Start with the base game if you want to learn faction creation and combat before adding more systems. Choose additional content around a specific feature you want rather than buying everything before your opening realm.
How Factions, Magic, and Combat Work
The game operates on two connected scales. Across the realm, you explore, expand cities, manage resources, and negotiate with other rulers. In tactical battles, you command individual units and use their abilities alongside spells.

Faction creation combines physical form, culture, traits, and an opening Tome of Magic. The base game's forms include Human, Dwarfkin, Elfkin, Feline, Goblinoid, Halfling, Molekin, Orcoid, Ratkin, and Toadkin. Base-game rulers can be Champions or Wizard Kings.
Your research then gives that starting concept room to evolve. Tomes introduce spells and other options, while magical transformations can visibly alter your people. The six magical affinities are Order, Chaos, Nature, Materium, Astral, and Shadow.
Build around how those choices interact:
- Connect research to your army. Choose tomes with spells and enchantments that support the units you plan to field.
- Use both city production queues. Cities have separate queues for structures and units, so plan economic development alongside recruitment.
- Account for morale. Evaluate abilities and battlefield roles alongside damage when choosing how to approach a fight.
- Choose realm traits deliberately. Geography, climate, inhabitants, and rule modifiers can change the conditions your faction faces.
Story realms and narrative events give those systems context. You can also customize realms, then bring rulers into the Pantheon and encounter your creations as potential allies or rivals in later games.
Multiplayer, Workshop Mods, and Community Features
Multiplayer supports both Classic Turns and Simultaneous Turns. Classic Turns has players act in sequence; Simultaneous Turns lets players handle their strategic turns at the same time. Tactical battles still use turn-based combat.

Agree on the turn format before starting a group game. Choose Classic Turns for a sequential pace, or Simultaneous Turns when your group wants to make strategic decisions concurrently.
The optional Allied Victories setting allows the winner's direct allies to share victory. Alliance membership does not make every victory requirement collective, however: allied provinces do not count toward Expansion Victory, and allies' bound Gold Ancient Wonders do not count toward Magic Victory. Plan those objectives around your own qualifying holdings.
Steam Workshop adds another way to customize your games. Check a mod's compatibility information before adding it, especially after a major update. Establish the game's standard rules in an unmodded realm before changing systems you are still learning.
Player reviews are 80.7% positive, with 19,040 positive reviews and 4,553 negative reviews. Read recent reviews for the parts of strategy games that matter to you—such as empire management, tactical combat, or multiplayer—rather than relying entirely on the overall percentage.
The Silver Seas, Manta Update, and Expansion Choices
The Silver Seas and the Manta Update launched on November 3, 2026. Returning players should read the Manta changes before carrying an older build into a new realm.
Earlier 2026 releases include Rise from Ruin on March 9 and Secrets of the Archmages on June 16. Expansion Pass 4 is also available, with Court of the Archfey scheduled for Q1 2027 and Forge of the Firstborn scheduled for Q2 2027. Keep those future releases separate from content you can play immediately.
Several earlier DLC packs offer clear reasons to expand your faction options:
- Dragon Dawn adds Dragon Lords, the Lizardfolk form, additional tomes, and the Ashen War realm.
- Empires & Ashes introduces the Reaver culture, Avian form, and Seals of Power victory mechanic.
- Primal Fury adds the Primal culture, Lupine and Goatkin forms, and the Stormwreathed Isles realm.
- Eldritch Realms adds the Umbral Abyss map layer and Eldritch Sovereign ruler type.
- Ways of War introduces the Oathsworn Culture, Simians and Ogrekin, and intrigue events involving betrayals and assassinations.
Compare those additions with your next faction idea. Pick Dragon Dawn to create a Dragon Lord, or Eldritch Realms to explore its additional map layer and ruler type.
