Why Can’t You Excavate in Arcalot?
The Age of Wonders 4 Arcalot cannot excavate issue can stall your advance while Lithyl’s ritual keeps counting down. Excavation works on eligible underground earth, rather than every wall or blocked province. Check your Excavation skill, the map layer, and the target terrain before spending more turns trying to open the same route.
Underground earth and solid rock serve different purposes. Excavation clears earth to expose usable provinces, resources, and connections. Bedrock remains a barrier, and surface mountains are outside the excavation mechanic.
Owning a province or building improvements there does not make it an excavation target. You need an earth-filled underground province that the excavation interface identifies as eligible.

Check Your Skill, Terrain, and Army Position
Work through these checks in order:

- Check access to Excavation. It is an Empire Skill, and factions with Underground Adaptation start with it. For a surface faction, inspect your Empire Skills rather than assuming that entering the underground grants the ability.
- Switch to the underground layer. Use an Underground Passage to reach it. Excavation does not create a new entrance from an ordinary surface province.
- Activate excavation mode. Use the shovel control to identify eligible provinces. Follow the interface’s highlights instead of selecting every nearby wall.
- Move a unit directly beside the target province. Being able to see a province is different from having a unit touching its border.
- Inspect nearby terrain if the target remains inaccessible. Look for eligible earth along another cavern edge rather than continuing to target solid rock.
You do not need a scout specifically for digging. Any military unit can excavate once you have access to the mechanic. Use nearby troops for local excavation and send your mobile scouts toward passages and unexplored routes.
Move closer before judging a wall by its appearance. Underground visibility can make earth and bedrock difficult to distinguish from a distance.
Some earth-filled provinces glow because they conceal a structure, such as a Resource Node, Magic Material, or Infestation. That glow helps you choose where to investigate; it does not mean every excavatable province must glow.
Find a Route Through Arcalot’s Mountains
Arcalot is the final story realm of the Eldritch Realms storyline, and its geography matters when planning an advance. The surface has southern and northern halves connected by a mountain pass. Mountains surround the northern area on its other three sides.

Scout the mountain pass when moving north on the surface. Trying to excavate those surface mountains will not create a shortcut.
Underground exploration also matters because Meandor begins underground northwest of your starting position, while Merlin begins underground near the center of the map’s northern edge. Locate passages and explore the connected caverns rather than assuming a straight underground tunnel can reach either ruler.
Arcalot’s opening event includes a choice that grants Underground Adaptation and reveals a large portion of the underground. Use that visibility to examine the underground layout, then move units closer to inspect potential excavation targets. Revealing terrain does not remove its physical barriers.
Dig Without Losing Time to Lithyl’s Ritual
Excavation can uncover resources, but opening every nearby province competes with Arcalot’s immediate objectives. Prioritize earth that expands useful city space or opens a route you intend to use.

Keep fighting troops within reach when uncovering glowing provinces. Excavated structures can have defenders, and an exposed Infestation claims territory and begins its wake-up countdown. Avoid opening several threats around an undefended city.
Lithyl’s ritual can be delayed by defeating qualifying thralls: units with Gloom Strider or Umbral Flesh, including eligible marauders, Free City forces, and Umbral Dwelling armies. Units in friendly faction armies do not count.
After completing Shadow of the North, Sundren’s involvement also lets destroyed Umbral Nests and Umbral Dwellings delay the ritual. When an excavation route reaches an impassable barrier, redirect your army toward accessible objectives that buy time for the campaign.
