Age of Wonders 4 Major Race Transformations Explained

How Major Race Transformations Work

Age of Wonders 4 major race transformations can turn your people into angels, demons, or undead, but each race can have only one. That choice shapes your army’s abilities, weaknesses, and appearance. Choose around the troops you actually field and the faction you want to play.

Race transformations permanently modify a race. You usually apply them through spells cast by that race’s keeper, although certain events and the Umbral Disciples Society Trait also grant transformations.

The distinction between minor and major transformations matters:

  • Minor transformations generally stack, with specific exceptions.
  • Major transformations are limited to one per race.
  • Compatible minor transformations can accompany a major transformation.

That last point leaves plenty of room for customization. Taking a major transformation doesn’t mean abandoning the smaller upgrades that support your build.

Remember that the target is a race, rather than every unit in your empire. Count how many troops and eligible heroes belong to that race before investing heavily in its transformation. An army built around other creatures receives less value from upgrading your people.

Angelic Transformation vs. Astral Attunement

Angelic Transformation and Astral Attunement each cost 600 mana and 600 world casting points. Their benefits take your army in different directions: one grants flight and celestial traits, while the other provides ethereal defenses and spell-triggered bonuses.

Angelic Transformation: Flight With Resistance Tradeoffs

Flight changes how your troops navigate battles. Flying units can move past most units and obstacles, giving you more freedom to reach targets and reposition. They also gain +2 Vision Range.

On the world map, Flying uses a movement cost of 5 across terrain, but it still requires Seafaring to cross water hexes. Don’t plan a water crossing around wings alone.

Faithful reduces unit upkeep by 10%, adding an economic benefit to the combat package. Control Loss Immunity also protects against effects such as mind control and berserk.

Check your opponents’ damage types before committing. The −4 Blight and Frost Resistance penalties deserve attention when those attacks are common in enemy armies.

Astral Attunement: Ethereal Protection and Spell Triggers

Astral Attunement combines +2 Defense with four status immunities. Pass Through lets affected units move through obstacles, while combat spellcasting grants a random positive status effect.

Build around frequent spellcasting to make use of that trigger. Because the positive effect is random, plan your tactics around the dependable defenses and movement benefit rather than a particular bonus appearing.

The −4 Lightning Resistance penalty creates a clear vulnerability. Inspect lightning damage in opposing armies before sending transformed troops into a fight.

Other Transformation Paths to Consider

Several other major transformations offer distinct ways to develop your army. Compare their central mechanics before spending research and casting resources on a different direction.

Demonkin

Demonkin combines Flying with Burning immunity and Frenzy. Frenzy rewards landing attacks by increasing damage, making continued aggression part of the transformation’s appeal.

Keep attacking with affected units to build that offensive benefit. Pair the mobility with opportunities to reach enemies and maintain pressure.

Burning immunity protects against the status effect; it does not mean immunity to all fire damage.

Wightborn

Wightborn turns the affected race into Undead and grants Life Steal. Its sustain comes from attacking, connecting damage output with recovery during battle.

Use that recovery to support units that can keep landing hits. Account for the Undead resistance profile before committing: the transformation includes weaknesses to Spirit and Fire damage.

Its morale effects also change how the army interacts with morale-based bonuses and penalties. Review those interactions before combining it with a build centered on morale.

Gaia’s Chosen

Gaia’s Chosen provides additional hit points, Status Resistance, and Charge Resistance through the Tome of Paradise.

Those benefits focus on surviving combat and resisting disruption. Use Charge Resistance when positioning troops against charging enemies, and factor the added durability into how you hold your line.

Stack Minor Transformations Carefully

The one-major limit doesn’t prevent you from layering compatible minor upgrades onto the same race. The important exceptions include:

TransformationIncompatible transformation
SupergrowthSpawnkin
Pure SoulUmbral Flesh
Pure SoulGloom Strider

Plan these combinations before casting. Supergrowth and Spawnkin occupy competing roles, while Pure Soul can block a route involving Gloom Strider.

Keep the distinction between skipping major transformations and skipping all transformations clear. You can leave the major slot unused while continuing to develop your people through compatible minor spells.

Transformation Ascetics is a different commitment: it blocks minor transformations as well as major ones. Don’t choose it simply because you dislike the appearance of one major transformation.

Do You Need a Major Transformation?

A major transformation is not required to defeat AI opponents. Its value depends on how well it fits your research path, army composition, and faction concept.

Take one when its benefits support the units you already use. If reaching it would pull your research away from the rest of your build, weigh that detour against the upgrades you would otherwise pursue.

Appearance also matters when you’re building a themed faction. Transformation visuals can be adjusted through the active effect in the spellbook, but movement-related features can remain visible. Disabling an angelic glow, for example, doesn’t remove the wings.

Astral Attunement and Wightborn offer more flexibility for hiding their visual changes. Check the appearance controls before abandoning a transformation over cosmetics, and keep the major slot open if none of the available choices fits your faction.
