Does the Old Empire Tree Mod Still Work?

If you’re searching for an Age of Wonders 4 old empire tree mod, Expanded Empire Tree is currently marked outdated and incompatible. Enabling it after the Empire Tree rework can crash the game. Compatibility matters here because the overhaul removed legacy skills that the mod depended on.

Expanded Empire Tree also changed the older system substantially: it added branches, introduced skills, and adjusted existing bonuses. Its purpose was to expand empire development, rather than preserve the original tree exactly.

Keep that distinction in mind when choosing what you want back. Restoring the original progression and reviving this particular overhaul are different modding projects.

What Expanded Empire Tree Changed

Expanded Empire Tree gave each affinity additional branches and skills, made all rites repeatable, and rebalanced several existing abilities. Later changes expanded the general trunk and added end-of-path nodes that let players unlock the other branch.

Its historical balance changes show how extensively it modified empire development:

  • Astral Inspiration: Reduced the Knowledge cost of another random skill by 15%, down from an earlier 25% discount.
  • Exalted by Shadows: Increased hero experience gain by 100%, reduced from an earlier 200% increase.
  • Soiltenders: Granted farms +10 Food, increased from +5.
  • Natural Order: Added +2 Knowledge to provinces with Forests.
  • Druidic Empire: Also increased the city cap.

These are features of the outdated mod, rather than bonuses to plan around in the current unmodded game.

The appeal was the extra room to shape an empire through affinity progression. However, recreating that experience now involves more than restoring the old tree’s layout: removed skills need functional replacements or rebuilt implementations.

What the Official Empire Tree Rework Changed

The redesigned Empire Development Tree arrived with the free Sprite Update alongside Secrets of the Archmages. It tackled several limitations of the original system: a single skill line per affinity, narrow resource specializations, and branches that stopped offering purchases once completed.

The update introduced 44 additional nodes, mutually exclusive choices, and repeatable rites. It also broadened the resources supported by individual affinities, moving away from such concentrated pairings as Nature with Food and Population.

Relevant update milestones are:

  • Secrets of the Archmages and the Sprite Update: Launched together with the redesigned Empire Development Tree.
  • November 3, 2026: The Silver Seas and Manta Update launched.

For mod compatibility, look for support for the game version you actually play. An overhaul built around the older progression system needs more than a familiar name or similar screenshots.

Repeatable Rites Already Exist in the Reworked Tree

Repeatable rites are now part of the official redesign. Each use increases a rite’s Imperium cost and affinity-point requirement, creating further purchases after progressing through a branch.

That changes the reason to install an empire overhaul. If repeatable rites are your main goal, explore the current tree before adding a mod.

Some Familiar Skills Were Replaced

Power from Slaughter and its Balor unlock were cut during the redesign. The Materium rite associated with the Breastplate of the Champion was reworked to provide Essence and Fragments for the Item Forge.

Other changes introduced choices between specialized and broadly useful benefits. In Order, Cultural Exchangers grants Knowledge for treaties, while its alternative, Spiritual Conviction, provides Mana for maintaining stable cities.

If you miss a particular legacy ability, search for that ability’s restoration specifically. A larger tree can offer more options while still leaving out the mechanic your old build relied on.

What to Check Before Choosing an Empire Tree Overhaul

Start with compatibility, then examine the actual skill changes:

  • Read the supported game version. Expanded Empire Tree’s outdated status and incompatibility warning are reasons to leave it out of a current-version campaign.
  • Inspect the changed abilities. Look for the specific summons, economic effects, or branch choices you want restored.
  • Review overlapping modifications. Expanded Empire Tree modifies Core_Empire_Development.rpk, EmpireProgression_Tree.rpk, and Empire_ProgressionItems.rpk. Compare those files with other empire-development mods before combining them.
  • Plan affinity choices around functional skills. Choose society traits and tomes that support your intended army and economy, then account for the empire bonuses available in your chosen version.

For an older build centered on a removed skill, identify that missing effect before rebuilding the faction. A Balor unlock, repeatable rite, and farm-income bonus solve very different problems; choose an overhaul by the mechanics it actually provides.
